CNN posted in their headline via their mobile RSS feed that aboard the delayed flight to Michigan a passenger set off fireworks, delaying the 330 airbus from its designated arrival. Fireworks remain depicted within the story yet according to their current headline, updated at 7:04 pm, the fireworks are now specified as an explosive device.
An explosive device by definition is not a firework. Thanks CNN for using fear enhancing terminology to buff your ratings. You're closer to FOX than I thought.

I was monitored CNN's RSS feed yesterday, and it did say fireworks at first, but then another post came out and said the White House declared it was "an explosive device" that had been foiled and that it was "an attempted act of terrorism." Blame the White House for fear-mongering, not CNN.

Great point.
Still, it is an incorrect use of the word "explosive device", device itself meaning something that is intricate by design. Firework: gunpowder plus fire. Not so much.
